Ruth Rendell

The South Bank Show celebrates the work of one of Britainís greatest living crime novelists, RUTH RENDELL.

Over the past 40 years Rendell has penned over 40 novels, most famously the Inspector Wexford novels, and several more under the pseudonym of Barbara Vine.

Rendell talks to Melvyn Bragg about her extraordinary career and her ability to get under the skin of her most appalling psychopathic characters.

Fellow crime novelist PD James explains how Rendell has succeeded in challenging and transforming the detective novel and actor George Baker, who played Chief Inspector Wexford in the television series, talks about the popularity of the character and how Rendell developed him over her career.
